EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION ON INTEGRATED THERMAL MANAGEMENT FOR LITHIUM-ION BATTERY PACK WITH COMPOSITE PHASE CHANGE MATERIALS

Author(s):Dongsheng Wena, Hongwei Wu, Jincheng Tanga, Shang Shib, Yongqi Xiea, Yuming Xinga, Zhongliang Hud
Keywords:composites, electronics, Fillers, Hot Disk, Integrated thermal management, Lithium-ion power battery, phase change materials, Thermal Conductivity, Transient plane source (TPS) method
Abstract:In this study, thermal behaviors of an integrated thermal management system (ITMS) with phase change materials (PCMs) and air conditioning exhaust are examined. To enhance the thermal conductivity of the PCM, copper foam and paraffin were added. The thermal conductivity of the composite PCM was measured by TPS 1500 Hot Disk analyzer, based on the transient plane source method.

GRAPHENE-ENHANCED PHASE CHANGE MATERIALS FOR THERMAL MANAGEMENT OF BATTERY PACKS Author(s):Alexander A. Balandin, Pradyumna Goli

Keywords:Fillers, graphene, lithium-ion batteries, pcms, phase change materials, Thermal Conductivity, TPS Technique, Transient Plane Source, Transient plane source (TPS) method, Hot Disk
Abstract:The potential of graphene and few-layer graphene to be used as fillers in a paraffin wax phase change material (PCM) was evaluated. The goal was to prepare a composite PCM with a higher thermal conductivity than the pure paraffin wax. The ability of the composite PCM to reduce temperature variation in lithium ion batteries was also evaluated over 10 charging-discharging cycles. It was found that the composite PCM was better able to reduce the temperature rise induced by charging and discharging than the pure paraffin PCM.

TOWARD LITHIUM ION BATTERIES WITH ENHANCED THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY

Category: Hot Disk TPS
Author(s):Alexander A. Balandin, Denis L. Nika, Jackie D. Renteria
Keywords:Fillers, graphene, Nanoparticles, pcms, phase change materials, Thermal Conductivity, thermal energy storage, transient plane source method, Hot Disk
Abstract:The authors present a review of the thermal properties of graphene, and present one example of a practical application of graphene in thermal management, as an additive to phase change materials. It was found that the use of liquid-phase-exfoliated graphene as a filler in phase change materials has the potential to enhance the thermal management in high-power battery packs. The results also indicated that graphene had the potential to outperform metal nanoparticles and other carbon allotropes as a filler in these materials.

Keywords:Batteries, carbon black, Carbon nanotubes, CNTs, Cross-plane TC, Electrodes, Filtration, High-power-density batteries, Hot Disk, In-plane TC, Lithium-ion, Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), Nanoparticles, Temperature, thermal management, Transient plane source (TPS), Transient plane source (TPS) method, Y-Fe2O3
Abstract:Li-ion battery electrodes are typically mixed with carbon black materials which have low thermal conductivity in high-power-density battery applications. In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were added to Li-ion battery electrodes to improve thermal conductivity. A hot disk measured the thermal conductivity of the electrode samples at room temperature using the transient plane source (TPS) method. Results showed that the addition of MWCNTs enhanced the thermal conductivity of the electrodes by up to two orders of magnitude compared to the conventional mode of synthesis. The success of this research can be applied to the thermal management of commercial electrode-active products in the future.

GRAPHENE-ENHANCED HYBRID PHASE CHANGE MATERIALS FOR THERMAL MANAGEMENT OF LI-ION BATTERIES

Author(s):A. Dhar, Alexander A. Balandin, J. Renteria, P. Goli, R. Salgado, S. Legedza
Keywords:Fillers, graphene, hybrid phase change material, hydrocarbon, latent heat, lithium-ion batteries, mobile communications, pcms, phase change materials, self-heating, Temperature, Thermal Conductivity, thermal management, transient plan source technique, transport properties , Hot Disk
Abstract:In this article, researchers aim to improve the thermal management of Li-ion batteries, by introducing graphene fillers to hybrid phase change materials. The thermal management of any battery is dependent on the latent heat stored within the phase change material as it transitions phases. During this time, it is also crucial to reduce the chances of an internal temperature rise. Researchers used the Hot Disk Transient Plane Source 2500 S model to determine the thermal conductivity of the phase change materials. The results concluded that the addition of graphene to the phase change materials, increased the thermal conductivity by over two orders of magnitude, while maintaining the latent heat storage ability, as well as maintaining a lower internal battery temperature.
